Was lange währt, wird endlich gut!
Die Erlaubnis, 5 Fragen an Bela Fleck zu richten, habe ich relativ schnell bekommen, nur sollte ich sie ihm direkt mailen, konnte aber keine persönliche E-Mail-Adresse finden. Also habe ich sie an das Management geschickt, mit der Bitte um Weiterleitung, nach einiger Zeit habe ich dann noch mal höflich nachgefragt und jetzt sind die Antworten da!
Bei nur 5 Fragen habe ich gedacht, die stelle ich gleich mal selbst; denn ich hatte schon eine ganze Reihe im Kopf, ich hoffe, die von mir getroffene Auswahl sagt Euch zu. Jetzt also das kurze Interview im "Originalton", ich werde versuchen, das Interview zu übersetzen, wenn es denn gewünscht wird!?
Musikzirkus:
Bela, in our forum we've got a big variety of tastes in music and there are quite a lot, who do not know You too well, even I „found“ You and the Flecktones in 2007 (!) - would You please describe Your music with Your own words and intentions!
Bela:
We write and play our own music, which is built from all the music that we love. It is a blend of jazz and bluegrass and lots of other stuff.
Musikzirkus:
You collaborated with a big variety of musicians of the different Genres, just to name a few: Rory Gallagher, Edgar Meyer, Tiger Okoshi, Chick Corea, Bruce Hornsby, Jean Luc Ponty and Paul McCandless. Besides that You work with Your band the Flecktones now since almost 20 years and there was only one (?) change in personnel – what is the secret of the success of „Bela Fleck & the Flecktones“?
Bela:
I think it is difficult to find musicians as unusual and capable as the guys in the Flecktones. So although I respect and love playing with many musicians, none of them can make the music sound like these guys can. So I think we continue to find each other interesting and inspiring, so we keep playing together.
Musikzirkus:
For many of my friends, the Banjo is still a strange instrument, sort of country, bluegrass and 60's protestmovement instrument, You play also the music of my favourite composer Johann Sebastian Bach and Jazz – what comes next?
Bela:
Next for me is an album and film that I made in Africa in 2005. I went to Mali, Gambia, Tanzania and Uganda and played with incredible musicians. Also I am working on a project with Zakir Hussein and Edgar Meyer with orchestra, that should be very cool.
Musikzirkus:
I just ordered the DVD „Live At The Quick“, but I saw it before and I was overwhelmed by the performance. Do You plan more concerts with guest artists from different musical backgrounds?
Bela:
The Flecktones recently completed a christmas album, with guests such as Klezmer musician, And Statman, and Tuvan vocal group Alash. It is a good example of the sort of thing we love to do.
Musikzirkus:
Any chance to see You and the Flecktones in Germany (North Germany would be great!) in the near future?
Bela:
I hope we can get there in the fall of 2009.
